Default Playing again after two year hiatus, monking has changed.

Hey everyone, its been awhile.

I was finally able to get back to Guild Wars after a long break caused by many things (girlfriend, college, etc.) and now I'm back and I can't help but feel like this game has totally changed, not all for the better.

I used to love playing my monk and was predominately a Bonder in areas like FoW, but also would run it throughout areas with little or manageable enchant removal. I came back excited to get back into things but now it seems decent pug's are a thing of the past (I love playing with real people), and more-so it seems I can't play any build I would in the past because of all the "OMG HB or leave!" groups that require a certain monk "or else".

I don't have EotN, so I feel like my monk character has an even harder road to get back into things. Guildless now, in-game friends are gone, lol, it sucks for a monk.

Any build/monk advice for an old die-hard who feels like monking left him behind?

pvxwiki.com will get you up to speed on the meta builds.
Most of the wiki builds are good but have open slots or need to be modified.

Often it's a good idea to simply run what the group wants you to, as long as they don't suggest blatantly awful changes. I still don't know why people like HB so much for pve, it proves large redbarring but HB bars typically lack prots etcetera.

The game's full of anti-enchantment now, so while a bonder will still work WoH is usually better, though HB is decent in pve and you can also try a ZB prot of any number of other weird builds for variety.

You can still pug, but generally it takes a few minutes to put together a half decent party, often I'll end up sitting around giving build help for 20 minutes before a mission.

Discover the game again yourself. Trust me when I tell you, listening to anyone here who says anything about PvXwiki or UWSC or any other jargin will only turn you into another GW grind zombie.

Try to learn what the new metas are for pve areas and that is all you can really do.

Thanks everyone for the input I really appreciate it, I will submerge myself back into the game that I loved for thousands of hours previously. Gotta get out there and get rid of the rust.

HB is usually rubbish, the only time I would ever run it is if HB is required (not wanted) for that group. Look at joining a guild, if they are any good they will let you you run something pretty close to what you want except in those circumstance where a build is required.

Find a guild which allows you to play a decent monk instead of HB, UA or E/Mo Ether.
But in general PUGs will ask for certain monk builds, specially the farming teams.
Have that build or be gone, it's always been like that only the bar has changed...
